The Reclining Hero Pose, or
Supta Virasana, is a grounding pose that calms the nervous system and helps to normalize blood pressure.
Getting in the starting position
- Kneel on your yoga mat with your knees hip width apart. Keep your upper body straight. Your ankles should be in line with your knees. The tops of your feet should be resting on the mat.
Performing the pose
- Bending at the hips, bring your upper body forward until you can rest your forehead on the ground about a foot (30cm) in front of your knees. Bring your palms behind you to rest on your calves and smooth them back to gently put pressure on your calf muscles.
- Sit back between your ankles. Sit up straight, with your spine straight.
- Lean back and walk your hands back. Rest on your elbows with your forearms on the ground and your hands touching your feet.
- Gently lower the rest of your body to the ground. Stretch your arms over your head along the floor. Tuck in your chin. Hold the pose for several breaths, then release.
