A penny used to be more useful than it is today; for example, you could buy three pieces of candy for a penny once upon a time! Today, not much is available to buy with a penny, so many people tend to toss them into a jar, saving them until they are worth dollars. But if you want to

Caution: Read warning at end of article before using these methods on old collectible coins!
Vinegar and salt method
- Get a glass of vinegar or lemon juice. Add about a teaspoon of regular table salt and mix.
- Place your pennies in the vinegar or the lemon juice. Make sure they are not on top of each other.
- Leave the pennies for around five minutes in the glass of vinegar or lemon juice.
- Take the pennies out, and wash them off. Let them dry for around five minutes so they will no longer be wet. They will now sparkle.
Ketchup/Tabasco method
- Locate a cup and some ketchup. This method also works with Tabasco sauce.
- Put enough ketchup in the cup to cover up the coin.
- Put the coin in, and wait three minutes.
- Wash the coin off in hot water.
Coca Cola Method
- Get a can or bottle of Coca Cola.
- Set the pennies in a dish so that they are not sitting on top of each other.
- Put just enough Coca Cola in the dish to cover the pennies.
- Let sit for about 4-5 hours (for better results flip over half way through the process).
- Take the pennies out and wash them off with warm or hot water.
Bar Keepers Friend method
- Obtain some Bar Keepers Friend. This cleaning solution works on all copper very quickly, like pennies and copper bottom cookware.
- Just wet the coins, then put on some Bar Keepers Friend (which is oxalic acid).
- Wash lightly and rinse off. Easy!
Edit Eraser method
- Grab a dirty penny and an eraser.
- Rub the penny with the eraser as if you were trying to erase a mark on paper.
- Flip the penny and repeat above steps as needed. This will take about 10 seconds per penny.
- Try cleaning your quarters, dimes, and nickels using these techniques.
- You can even use tamarind juice instead of vinegar or lemon juice.
Edit Warnings
- If you do this with any collectable coins, you will lower their value and can even ruin them.
- Do not mix coins. Clean pennies only without any other type of coin or the other coins will become extremely discolored.
- Vinegar dissolves zinc. If your pennies are scratched and newer than 1982, they may end up hollowed out.
