How to Create Hidden Watermarks in GIMP
Oct 14th 2012, 02:00

Ever felt like adding a hidden watermark to your image to protect your work from rippers? Look no further––now you too can do it the easy way, using GIMP.

Note: Intermediate level experience in the use of "Gimp" needed.

Edit Steps

  1. Open your desired image in GIMP.
  2. Create a new transparent layer. Add some text, symbols, etc., that you intend to use to verify your ownership of your image.
  3. Lower the opacity of this layer so that its contents are no longer visible to the naked eye. Just be sure to not make it zero.
  4. Merge both your layers and save this image under a new name. The .tiff format works the best. Note that this is the image you will be making public, so keep a backup of the original image without the watermark too.
    • To save it on the Internet, you will need to use a compatible format, such as exporting to a JPG, PNG, or GIF file.
  5. Ensure that you have incorporated the integrity of ownership or proof of ownership before uploading.

After you realize that your image has been stolen, you can complain to the respective authorities, but they need some sort of evidence. This is where your original image comes in to play. Open your original image and then open your watermarked image as a layer over it.
  6. Change the layer-mode of your watermarked image to "Grain extract" and merge both layers. Then go to filters-enhance-unsharp mask and change the amount to 10.0. This will reveal your hidden watermark.
