How to Make an Adjustable Storage Container from Plastic Bottles Oct 10th 2012, 08:00 Turning a plastic bottle into a storage container is a simple and useful way to gain helpful storage in the home or office environment. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to transform a nicely shaped plastic bottle (such as the Japanese hexagonal shaped iced tea bottle shown here) into see-through storage that has many uses. - Find two suitable plastic bottles of the exact same type. Try to choose bottles with an interesting design that you like the look of; also, for this to work, it's best to choose a bottle with panel sides, such as the hexagonal shape, as this will slide together best when both bottles are connected. Clean the bottles by washing in warm, soapy water. Allow to dry as much as possible before proceeding to the next step (you'll be able to remove any droplets of water after cutting though).
- Remove the top part of the first bottle at a suitable spot. In the image shown here, you can see that this bottle was removed from the neck base upward, as the remaining part of the bottle is long enough to create the base or top of the storage container being made and still keeps the interesting design. Cut roughly for now––you'll tidy the edge in the next step. Repeat for the second bottle.
- Neaten the cut made in the last step. Using the scissors, carefully cut around the edge to neaten and straighten it as best you can. Take this opportunity to wipe out any water droplets too.
- Repeat for the edge of the second bottle.
- Push a dent into one side of each bottle. This will require gentle strength on your part, to force one panel of the bottle in without denting the rest of the bottle.
- Check the fit. After you've slightly dented one panel of the bottle, slide one end over the other end to check the fit. You might need to make a few adjustments to ease the sliding.
- Store your goodies.
- The length of the storage container can be adjusted to fit differently sized objects.
- Finished!
- Things you could store in this container include: straws, beads, dried flowers for craft use, buttons, thread/floss, string/twine, nuts and bolts, all those little pieces needed for your sporting or outdoor activities, found objects, pens and pencils, toys, candies, etc.
- Open and close by twisting one end of the container and pulling up or pushing down, as needed.
Edit Warnings - Take care when cutting––jagged plastic edges can cut you if you're not paying attention.
Edit Things You'll Need - 2 plastic bottles (design of hexagonal panels or similar panels)
- Craft scissors
- Objects to place inside
