How to Ripen a Plum

Plums are a fruit for enjoying in the fall season. But a hard plum isn't a pleasant eating experience. If you have hard plums, they can be improved through home ripening, using this simple method.

Edit Steps

  1. Find a clean paper bag. Empty it of any contents if needed.
  2. Place the hard plums inside the paper bag.
  3. Place a ripe banana in the bag. (You can also simply leave the plums in the bag without a banana––it will be slower but the plums should still ripen together in the enclosed environment.[1])
  4. Roll or staple the bag together at the top. Place in a fruit bowl or other suitable place for storage.
  5. Check regularly for ripening. The banana will give off ethylene, which will fasten the ripening of the hard plums. When checking, push lightly only, to avoid bruising the plums.
  6. Eat or cook with once the plums have ripened.

Edit Tips

Edit Warnings

  • Don't place unripened plums in the refrigerator! This is how they turn floury and mushy, all without ripening properly. The plums should only be placed in the refrigerator after they have ripened.[2]
