How to Fishtail Braid
Nov 22nd 2012, 08:00

The fishtail braid, also known as the herringbone or fishbone braid, looks elaborate and time-consuming. But here's a secret: it's surprisingly easy to do, and will become a go-to favorite for rushed mornings, especially if you have long hair. Here's how to do it.

Edit Steps

Method One: Regular Fishtail Braid!

  1. Divide your hair into two large sections, parting straight down the middle. For a sharper look, you can use a comb to part your hair evenly. If you'd prefer the tousled Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games) look, though, simply part it with your hands.
  2. Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section. Pull it over the top of the left section, and grasp it under the right section. In other words, the strand of hair has gone over the left section and finishes under the right section.
    • In general, try to use the same thickness for each strand throughout or your braid will look uneven.
    • For a more intricate braid, use skinnier strands. It takes more effort, but it looks gorgeous.
    • For a beginner, pulling it tighter helps you to learn the method properly.
  3. Repeat Step 2 on the other side. Pull a skinny strand of hair from the outside of the right section, pull it over the right section, then weave it under the left section.
  4. Keep alternating sides, weaving over and under, until you reach the bottom of the braid.
  5. Tie off the end with a hair bobble or elastic. Add a cute ribbon, barrette or charm to give it some personality if you'd like!
    • If you feel that the fishtail is too tight, use your fingers to gently massage into the strands a little to loosen it slightly.
    • If your hair is really long, more can be done at this stage, such as tucking the hair into a bun, weaving it around your head or across the front, etc. If you have slightly shorter hair, just fishtail it as far as you want.

Method Two: French Fishtail Braid

  1. Grab a section of hair at the top of your head, and split it into two halves. Start as you would for a regular French braid, with the section close to your center part. Hold one half in each hand.
  2. Pull up a strand from the left side of your hairline. For a more uniform braid, start at the front of your hairline and work down the sides as you go.
  3. Weave the strand over the left fishtail section and under the right fishtail section. Grab it with your right hand so that it's part of the right section.
  4. Pull up a strand from the right side of your hairline. As you did with the first strand, weave it over the right fishtail section and under the left fishtail section. Grab it with your left hand so that it becomes part of the left section.
  5. Keep pulling up strands of hair until you've grabbed all of it.
  6. Fishtail as usual for the rest of the braid.

Edit Tips

  • You can use bobby pins or hairspray to secure flyaways.
  • For thicker hair, consider using thicker strands for better control.
  • Fishtail braids are very unlikely to work if attempted on hair shorter than armpit length, especially if it is thick.
  • Never use standard office rubber bands in your hair - they will damage it.
  • Try a fishtail braid bun if your hair is long.
  • For a Katniss Everdeen look, start a French fishtail halfway up one side of your head.
  • For a messier look, tease your hair before braiding.
  • Doing the fishtail braid while your hair is wet will give it a firmer grip, creating a more precise braid.
  • It's harder to do them with short hair

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Hair tie, bow, or elastic band (best if hair tie contains no metal)
  • Brush or comb
  • Bobby pins (optional)
  • Mirror (optional)
