How to Make a Magnet Board from a Cookie Sheet Nov 21st 2012, 14:00 Missing valuable magnetic space to hang your souvenir magnet collection, favorite photos or useful memos? An easy and affordable solution is to make your own magnet board from a cookie sheet. It doesn't take long and it works well. - Find a metal cookie sheet. The size is up to you––the more magnets you want to add or the more notes you want to hold on it, the larger it will probably need to be.
- Choose a cookie sheet that is straight and not warped. If it is warped, see if you can bend it back into a flat surface.
- Check out thrift stores, friends' overflowing bakeware collections, Freecycle and online auctions for cheap or free sources of cookie sheets.
- Get some funky or simple wrapping paper from a closet, attic, etc. In this case, crepe paper has been used for its texture and bright color.
- Attach the paper to cover the cookie sheet. Fit a piece of wrapping paper to the cookie sheet. The hollow side should face to the back and is where you'll tape or glue the paper to. The flat back side of the cookie sheet now turns into your new magnet board. Tape or glue in place as neatly and strongly as possible––this image shows initial placement of holder tape before the maker returns to tape down all of the paper neatly to the surface.
- Important! Be sure to have cleaned the cookie sheet before wrapping it in paper and attempting to tape or glue. Any grease still on the sheet could prevent good adhesion.
- Be wary of sticky parts of the cookie sheet––they might cause the paper to catch and tear and if they're also greasy, can seep through the paper. Wash and dry well!
- Find the magnets. Use magnets that you already have (especially if you're displaying your collection) or purchase nice new ones if you don't have any magnets yet.
- Add the magnets to the board. Either arrange the magnets to show off your collection to its best advantage or use the new magnet board to hang up photos, drawings, memos and other things that need attention.
- Place your finished board on a window sill, desk, or table. If you'd like to hang it up, glue some thin gauge wire, thick string or fishing line thread to the back of the board to create a hanger, then hang on the wall.
- Finished.
- Try to use fun but simple wrapping paper; if the paper is too elaborate, it will detract from your artwork and photos.
- It is best to only add one layer of wrapping paper. If there is too much paper over the cookie sheet, the magnets might fail to cling to the metal.
