How to Make a Shelf Using a Skateboard Deck Nov 19th 2012, 14:00 Turning your old beloved but no longer street-worthy skateboard into a shelf will provide organization and style to any room. Here's how to add skater flare to your wall. Edit Steps Decide where you want your shelf to go. Do you want it over your bed, next to the door, or beside the computer? Measure the length of the skateboard to make sure it will fit. Make two small pencil marks at the side ends, and again about 5" (12.5cm) in from the sides. Use the level to make sure the marks are all even. Check for studs. Use a stud detector, or knock on the wall on the two inner pencil marks. If you hear hollow sounds when knocking, then it's good. The stud detector will beep if there is a stud. If you come across a stud, move your inner marks out or in accordingly. Attach the L brackets. Use metal brackets in preference to plastic ones, as they tend to be sturdier. Hold one up on one of the inner pencil marks. Using the power screwdriver, attach the L bracket with the screws. Repeat with the other mark and bracket. Do your best to keep the brackets straight––use the level to check. Balance the skateboard on the brackets. Hang the board on the brackets, and press down and forward to make sure it won't tip over. Use the shelf. It's time to put your things on display on your new shelf! Edit Video Edit Tips You can either remove or keep the wheels on the skateboard. If you choose to keep them, then you can hang S hooks on the axle. The hooks can hold anything from shirts to purses to jackets. If you choose not to use the level, have someone else check it. The last thing you want is all your things to fall off the shelf! If you rent your living space, it'd be a good idea to ask or at least tell the owner before you poke a hole in their walls.
