How to Completely Power Down Your iPad Dec 15th 2012, 02:00 When you push the power button briefly on an iPad so that its screen turns off, believe it or not, it is not completely turned off. It will continue to burn its charge at a faster rate than it would when turned off completely. It will also continue to accept alerts and you may be awoken by a chime in the middle of the night if the iPad has been left near where you sleep! Here is how to turn off the iPad completely when you aren't using it, saving energy and battery life. - Locate the iPad's power button. It is the same button you push to make a screenshot (with the 'Home' button) and the same one you use to temporarily shut down the iPad but not power off.
- Push the power button down and hold. Continue holding down the button until you see a red slider come up on the screen.
- Slide the red slider bar over.
- Put your iPad away. (It's a good time to recharge it while it is off.)
- When you need to use the iPad again, turn it back on. You will need to repeat the process of holding the power button down for a couple of seconds. A white Apple icon will appear and you'll need to wait a few seconds before the iPad fully powers back on.
- Try to remember to do this after using it each time, especially when putting it away for extended times, such as during sleep. For more details on preserving the iPad's battery life, read How to Extend the battery life of your iPad.
- If you change your mind about closing the iPad, don't touch the red slider; in about 10 seconds the iPad screen will restore.
