How to Create Holiday Snowmen out of Socks
Dec 7th 2012, 02:00

The holidays are a great time to create your own decorations, especially when you have someone to do it with. These cute snowmen decorations are inexpensive while easy and fun to make.

Edit Steps

  1. Choose a white tube sock. You are welcome to use other colors, but white works best for snowmen.
    • Avoid using ankle socks, they won't work.
  2. Fill the bottom of the sock with dry beans or rice until it is about 3/4 filled to the heel. You may need to adjust this later.
  3. Tie a rubber band tightly around the sock just above the beans or rice. This creates the bottom section of the snowman.
  4. Fill the top section of the snowman with cotton. Leave 4-5 inches (10-12.5cm) of space on the top.
  5. Secure the top with a rubber band. Make sure the sock snowman can "stand".
  6. Fold the open end of sock over itself so it looks like a beanie or hat.
  7. Glue buttons on the snowman using a hot glue gun. Use buttons for the eyes and for buttons going down the front of the snowman. Be creative!
  8. Use a permanent marker to draw a mouth of the snowman or cut out a piece of felt to glue on as a mouth.
  9. Cut a strip of fabric 3/4 inches to 1 1/4 inches (2-3cm) in width and any desired length. Try to use holiday-themed fabric if you can. Tie the felt around the bottom rubber band as the snowman's scarf.
  10. Cut two small holes in the sides of the snowman. Find two small sticks and place them in the holes as arms. Try to push the sticks in further so they don't fall out. You may want to secure the sticks with hot glue.
  11. Feel free to add more decorations like ribbon, stickers, buttons, and small trinkets or toys.
  12. Give your snowman as a gift or set up a winter scene with it. Use more cotton as snow and wrap up sugar cubes or dice with wrapping paper to use as presents.

Edit Tips

  • If you are a more experienced "creator" you may sew the buttons or felt on the snowman.
  • Use leftover scraps of fabric so this project is even easier on your wallet.

Edit Warnings

  • Small children who want to make a snowman may need help with a hot glue gun or scissors.
