How to Make a Holiday Bird Treat
Dec 19th 2012, 22:00

Making a holiday bird treat will help to ward off any winter food shortage for your local birds and is a fun way to get children involved in a giving and observing activity during the holidays. Consisting of high energy bird food attached to a pine cone, this holiday bird treat will bring delight to the birds and birdwatchers alike.

Time: 1 hour

Edit Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup lard
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 cups cornmeal or oatmeal
  • Small assortment of berries, raisins, dried fruit, nuts, sunflower seeds, etc. Depending on the size of your cone, 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup is sufficient

Edit Steps

  1. Melt the lard and peanut butter together over low heat in a saucepan.
  2. Stir in the cornmeal or oatmeal. Mix through.
  3. Remove the mixture from the oven. Let cool.
  4. While the mixture is cooling, get the pine cone ready. Attach fishing line, string or wire to the top of the pine cone to use as a hanger. Tie a strong knot.
  5. Place the pine cone on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. Spread the cooled mixture between the scales of the pine cone.
  6. Decorate your pine cone with the remaining assortment of ingredients by placing them onto the pine cone. They will attach to the wet mixture already on the cone.
  7. Chill the pine cone in the refrigerator to set hard. Place the cone into the refrigerator sitting on the cookie sheet. Alternatively, place it outside on the porch until the entire mixture hardens.
  8. Hang the holiday treat outside where the birds can access it easily. Make sure the spot you choose is cat-proof!
  9. Finished.

Edit Tips

  • This is a great project for children three years or older, with adult supervision.
  • The complexity of this project is classified as medium.
  • This is a great decoration for inside on your Christmas tree for a temporary time. Keep it inside during the holiday season, then move it outside for your wild bird friends to enjoy!
