| How to Make a Sparkly Snowflake Ornament Dec 3rd 2012, 14:00 This is a very simple craft requiring little artistic skill that looks elegant and professional when it's completed. It's perfect for attaching to gifts or hanging up for a little winter sparkle of your own. - Cut the piece of string into three 3-inch (7.5cm) pieces, one 4-inch (10cm) piece, one 8-inch (20cm) piece and six 1.5-inch (3.8cm) pieces. (Or, use your own sizes if you want a larger or smaller ornament.)
- Carefully lay out two pieces of wax paper. Squeeze a few teaspoons of glue onto one piece of wax paper.
- Dip one of the 3-inch (7.5cm) pieces of string in the glue, being sure to coat it thoroughly. Pinch two fingers together and run them down the string to remove any excess glue.
- Lay the piece of string flat across the second piece of wax paper, so it is straight. Make sure the paper is flat.
- Dip the second piece of 3-inch (7.5cm) string into the glue, removing the excess glue with your pinched fingers. Lay the string across the first string so the two make an "X."
- Dip the 4-inch (10cm) piece of string into the glue and remove the excess glue. Lay it across the first two strings so the three strings intersect in the center and are spaced evenly (like an asterisk). Reinforce the axis with a dab of glue, and press down firmly on it.
- Bend one end of the 4-inch (10cm) string into a loop. You can tie a piece of thread around that loop later to hang the snowflake. Now, the three pieces of string should appear to be roughly the same length.
- Coat the remaining 3-inch (7.5cm) piece of string in glue, remove the excess glue, and bend it into a circular shape. Center it on top of the three strings and press firmly where it intersects the other strings. Add a dab of glue to each intersection.
- Dip the 8-inch (20cm) piece in glue, bend it into a circle, and center it over the snowflake. Pinch the circular string so it resembles a six-pointed star.
- Dip each of the 1.5-inch (3.8cm) pieces into glue so they are completely coated, pinch off the excess glue, and bend each piece into a V-shape. Lay one piece on each of the six points of the snowflake so there is a three-pointed prong at the end of each point. Reinforce the axes with a dab of glue.
- Lightly sprinkle glitter across the snowflake. Then shake off the extra glitter.
- Let your completed snowflake dry overnight. When it is dry and hardened, gently peel it off the wax paper and remove any flakes of glue.
- Done. Hang your snowflake with a piece of thread and enjoy!
- Create new, more intricate patterns for some variety. Always keep three long strings as the base of any pattern, because the number of points on all snowflakes are multiples of three.
- Try to work somewhat quickly so the glue doesn't dry before you are done. If the strings start to harden too early, dip them again in glue.
- This technique can also be used to make Halloween cobweb decorations-–use black glitter instead.
- To make the snowflake sparkle more, add a bit of blue glitter.
Edit Warnings - These are somewhat delicate when they are done, so wrap them in tissue paper to store them. If a piece of string does break off, just reattach it with craft glue.
- Keep your snowflake away from small children, they could easily rip it apart.
