How to Make Your Own New Year's Box Dec 29th 2012, 00:00 A New Year's Day box is a special way to surprise yourself with a number of gifts and other items that you've stored away in the year before. It's a way to remind yourself of the year's achievements should you wish to include these too, so it can serve as a great review tool. Just remember that it'll take a year to create this (from one New Year's Day to the next), so you'll start it this year, and open it the next. New Year's Day (or a little before) - Prepare the box. A little before the first New Year's day, get a medium or large sized shoebox. Decorate it however you want to.
- Choose a piggy bank. The best type is the one you can't open up. This will be for all your spare coins––every cent counts!
- On a piece of paper, write down your New Year's resolution for this year.
- Make yourself a New Year's card for next year.
- Do any other papery stuff you want to, such as making yourself a paper doll, an origami piece or drawing yourself something. Place all your paper paraphernalia in an envelope and seal it. And put this into the shoebox.
During the year - Keep on working on those New Year's resolutions. Also, keep on saving! This is really important.
- Buy a cleansing product such as shampoo or soap, and wrap it up and place it in the shoebox.
- Try buying yourself mini presents. Items such as jewellery, an elegant pen, a figurine, etc. Whatever amuses you. And remember to wrap up and drop it into the shoebox. Make sure your presents won't be "old" or "rotten" by next year though. This means leaving food treats till last, ditto for book/music vouchers and anything else with an expiry date.
- Add notes whenever it seems appropriate through the year. This might be a record of an achievement, a journal entry of how you feel about something momentous or just simple affirmations of what you value about yourself. These notes will be very precious to you when you read them later, so don't be stingy with them!
Last week until New Year's Day - Buy yourself a treat. Maybe a box of chocolates. Place it somewhere safe for storage. Don't eat it up. Take notice of the sell-by date before you buy.
New Year's Eve - Place your treat in your shoebox, put in your piggy bank (which hopefully has lots of money by now), and make sure all the presents and the envelope and all other things that belong in the shoebox are in the shoebox! Put the lid on and place it somewhere safe and secure, such as on your desk.
New Year's Day - It's time! Hurray! Open up the shoebox and unwrap your gifts, read your cards and all, eat that treat, check of all the resolutions completed and the money... and enjoy the day.
- Add anything extra that you'd like.
- It's important to wrap and seal stuff in envelopes because that way you can't view your items until the next year, making it all the more exciting.
- Save as much as you can. To help you do this try to buy a piggy bank that can't be opened and place it where you can see it and drop any unwanted change into it. Also put in a 5 dollar note every month or so––it'll help increase the total quickly.
- Don't worry if you didn't complete your resolutions. Its a new year anyway by the time you open up the box, so that means a new start. And it's always helpful to review why the resolution didn't work out––perhaps you overstated it or perhaps it wasn't the right resolution for you.
Edit Warnings - No item should be added that could go rotten!
- Take care of the shoebox by not putting it in places others can get to and don't let it break apart.
- You must save the money in the piggy bank because it's just so much better when you have dozens of coins on New Year's day.
