How to Make Fried Oreos
Jan 21st 2013, 08:00

This a very easy snack or dessert to make, and very tasty too. It should be noted, however, it is not exactly a healthy choice, so temperance is advised.

Edit Ingredients

  • Packaged pancake mix with additional ingredients noted in package instructions
  • Oreo cookies
  • Cooking oil (suitable for frying)
  • Confectioner's sugar (optional)

Edit Steps

  1. Chill Oreo cookies in the refrigerator. Chill for about 4 hours.
  2. Prepare the pancake batter according to the directions on the package. Be careful to make sure it is a fairly thick batter. Using an electric mixer prevents the batter from splattering all around the kitchen!
  3. Pour about 2 or 3 inches (5-7.5cm) of cooking oil in a heavy cooking pot. Typically, a frying pan is not deep enough to "float" the cookies as they fry. Use an oil able to withstand high heat, such as peanut or coconut oils.
  4. Heat the cooking oil to about 335ºF/170ºC (F).
  5. Dip the Oreos in the prepared pancake mix.
  6. Put the Oreos in the frying pan carefully. Leave room between them for the batter coating to "rise" (expand) without the cookies touching each other.
  7. Cook for about 1 1/2 minutes, until the batter is golden brown. Turn ,if necessary, for each side to brown.
  8. Remove the fried cookies. Dust with confectioner's sugar if desired, and allow to cool.
  9. Eat!

Edit Tips

  • The colder the cookies are, the less they will be affected while the batter is cooking. Some recipes suggest freezing them prior to cooking.
  • They taste great served with ice cream or you can add whipped cream.
  • Use a pot which is large enough, and has high enough sides to allow the cookies room to float without touching each other. You could also use an 8" (20cm) Dutch oven.

Edit Warnings

  • Splashing hot cooking oil on a stove can cause a fire, or serious burns.
  • Allow cookies to cool thoroughly before eating.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Heavy boiler, or similar pot; deep frying machines are ideal, since they regulate their own temperature
  • Tongs, or other utensil to remove the fried cookies
  • Candy thermometer for checking the temperature of the cooking oil
  • Paper towels to take out excess oil
