| How to Make Salt Glitter Aug 12th 2012, 08:00 Salt glitter is a pretty way to brighten a craft project using just salt and food coloring. While salt glitter doesn't sparkle quite like real glitter, it does have a wonderful, glistening charm all of its own, thanks to the salt crystals. - Gather the items needed, as listed below.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the salt. In this example, two tablespoons of salt and one quarter of a teaspoon coloring were used.
- Mix the coloring into the salt until it is uniformly colored.
- Spread out the mixture on a cookie sheet.
- Preheat the oven at 350ºF/180ºC.
- Place the cookie sheet into the preheated oven.
- Cook it for about 10 minutes.
- Let the mixture cool, before use.
- Break up any clumps that may have formed by pressing them with your hand or a spoon, and there's your homemade glitter!
- Store any unused glitter in a salt shaker. It is still safe to eat, provided the food coloring used is safe to eat. However, it is not recommended to use any glitter that has been played with or used in craft projects.
- Baking removes moisture from the glitter that was introduced by the food coloring. Alternatively, you can put the mixture in the microwave for one to two minutes or let it air dry.[1] If microwaving, mix the salt and food coloring together in a microwave safe bowl until you're happy with the color. Stir well. Then place in the microwave for one to two minutes. Remove and stir to remove any lumps. It's now ready to use.
- If you don't have any food coloring handy, you can substitute watercolor paint. Obviously, this makes the salt inedible afterwards.[2]
- If you don't have watercolor paints, try taking the tip off of a magic marker and letting it bleed in water.
- For a fun prank, make black salt, mix a little of the white salt in and watch your guests be confused by two "peppers."
