How to Convert a PDF to a Flash Flip Book
Sep 3rd 2012, 03:00

Creating a flash flip book provides an engaging format in which to present a PDF. It has the effect of making your PDF file look more like a traditional book, complete with flipping pages. If you have PDFs that you'd like to turn into page turners, you'll need to convert them using a suitable program. This article provides directions for both pay-for-use and free options, which offer different options depending on your needs.

Edit Steps

Pay for use, with unlimited options

  1. Search online to find a flip PDF software. For example, http://www.flippdf.com is one such reference. Many such services will offer you two options: a free trial download or a full download that you must pay for. If you want the full set of options, you will usually have to purchase the latter version. However, you may be able to use the free version alone, depending on the needs of your project.
  2. Download and install the software.
  3. Open the newly installed program.
  4. Click the icon that prompts you to import a PDF file. This example uses FlipPDF to illustrate, but whatever program you choose should have a relatively similar interface and set of options.
  5. Choose the PDF file that you want to convert. Depending on the program that you use, your file may be converted as soon as you select a file, or you may have to click a button to begin the conversion.
  6. Edit your flip book. Different programs will have different options, but most should include many options for changing the style and layout of your flip book. Play around with the different settings until you find a look that you like.
  7. Export your flip book. Find the icon or menu item that allows you to export your project. When doing so, consider what format you want your flip book to be in. The best programs will allow you to save your project to your computer, embed it on an HTML webpage, or export it in a variety of formats.

Free to use, but with limited options

  1. Go to http://www.flipsnack.com/. This site is a good choice because it is free to use and does not require you to download any software. However, it does require you to pay for some of the advanced options, such as embedding your flip book on a web page.
  2. Click "Sign in" in the top right corner of the page. FlipSnack will give you the option of signing in using your Facebook, Twitter, or Google account, or of creating an account using your email address. Choose whichever option is best for you.
  3. Click the button on the homepage that says "Make a flipping book". This will take you to a page that allows you to choose a PDF to convert.
  4. Select the PDF that you wish to convert. You can do this in one of three ways:
    • Click "Browse" to search for the file on your computer's hard drive.
    • Drag the file from your desktop or a folder on your computer into the area that says "Drag and drop files here".
    • If the file is located online rather than on your computer, click "Import from URL" and then copy and past the appropriate URL into the box. Then click "OK".
    • Note: You can also edit the name of your flip book on this page. Simply enter the title you want in the box under "Title". (The default title is "New Flip".)
  5. Wait for the file to be converted. The conversion will begin automatically when you select a file using the "Browse" or "Drag and Drop" methods, or when you click "OK" using the "URL" method. It may take a few moments. When you are done converting files, click "Next".
    • Note that you can add multiple PDF files to your flip book. Simply do not click "Next" after the first file has been converted, and then select another file to convert. Click "Next" only when you are done converting files.
  6. Customize your flash flip book. The "Customize" page gives you a number of options to alter the style and settings of your flip book.
    • "Documents" shows a thumbnail image of each document that you have converted for this project.
    • "Choose template" allows you to change the template of your flip book. For example, "Hardcover flip" makes your flip book appear as a hardcover book, while "Spiral flip" gives it the look of a spiral notebook.
    • "Preview" shows the changes you make to your flip book in real time, so that you can see what it will look like.
    • "Settings" allows you many options for changing the appearance of your flip book, such as background color, texture, and many more.
    • When you are finished customizing you flip book, click "Finish" at the bottom or top of the page.
  7. Export your flip book. FlipSnack allows you to post your flip book to your Facebook wall, send it as a tweet to your Twitter followers, or send it as a link in an email, free of charge. You can also download it to your computer or embed it on a website, but you need to pay for these services.
