It's Mad Hatter's Day! How to Make a Mad Hatter's Hat With Duct Tape
Oct 6th 2012, 08:00

Whether you're celebrating Mad Hatter's Day on October 6th, throwing a Mad Hatter's tea party or dressing up as the Mad Hatter for Halloween, you'll be needing that extra special hat. Here is one way to make it––all from duct tape.

Edit Steps

  1. Find a big top hat. If possible, purchase an unwanted old top hat from a thrift store or used clothing store. You could also check online. If this isn't possible, revert to a party style top hat available from party stores, and get one that is as top hat like as possible. You can always tape on additional card underneath to make the hat appear taller and bigger than usual, as the duct tape will take on whatever shape you begin with.
    • If you don't have a top hat at all, you can still rig up a solution. Simply measure your head from up to 2 inches (5cm) below your hair line on your forehead, all around your head. Next, cut off a piece of duct tape of the length you've just measured. Now work your way up the "hat", sticking duct tape around until you reach your preferred height.
  2. Snugly wrap the hat in plastic wrap. Do this on all of the surface where the tape will be applied, as it forms the hat shape and protects the hat underneath.
  3. Cut out lengths of duct tape to wrap around the hat. The lengths should be long enough to wind around completely and either slightly overlap or just meet end to end. Keep the pieces sticky side up arranged on a flat surface where you're working and be careful not to accidentally get your skin attached to the lengths––it hurts to pull off!
  4. Neatly and carefully wrap the hat with the strips of duct tape around the hat, from top to bottom or bottom to top, whichever way feels most comfortable. Once the hat portion is done, carefully do the brim, using shorter pieces that wind around the brim and tuck just under it, adding them all the way around the brim until complete.
  5. Once you've covered the entire hat, peel off the duct tape hat sitting on the plastic wrap from the real hat underneath. Do this very carefully, as you'll want to keep the shape as much as possible.
  6. Line the inside of the hat with duct tape. This will stop the hat from sticking to your head/hair and also strengthens the hat shape.
  7. Decorate the hat. To make sure that the hat really does resemble the Mad Hatter's hat, you'll need to add the finishing touches:
    • Wrap a wide ribbon or even a silk/velvet/sleek scarf around the base of the hat, just about the brim. Tie it in a bow and leave a length hanging down the back of the hat. The ribbon color is up to you––some people use brown or maroon, some use a polka dot ribbon, but really, the Mad Hatter would probably have loved just about anything quirky.
    • Create a piece of paper or use an old-fashioned paper baggage tag (scrapbook pieces have these) with the price "10/6" written on it. Slip this on one side of the hat, in between the ribbon and hat.
    • If your Mad Hatter has had a particularly crazy day, add some random twigs and sticks, a teabag (unused), some hat pins, fake flowers, etc.
  8. Try it on. You're good to go.

Edit Tips

  • Purchase black duct tape. If you'd rather a different color, that's fine too, whatever goes with your outfit.
  • If you'd like crazy hair, a wig with crazy curls in crazy colors can be glued to the underside, back area of the brim too, for added effect.

Edit Warnings

  • Use care when cutting with scissors.
