How to Fold an Origami Lily
Jan 31st 2013, 02:00

Origami lilies look complicated but are actually quite straightforward to make. When made, they become ideal decorations and can be used for table centerpieces, gift packaging and craft work.

Edit Steps

  1. Start with a square piece of paper. Fold it in half both ways diagonally, then fold both ways like a greeting card. If you're using origami paper, start with the colored side facing up.
  2. Collapse it together. (Preliminary base.)
  3. Fold one side to the center. Then unfold it.
  4. Hold the center down. Lift up the pocket where you just folded it. Press it over to the middle, so it looks like this:
  5. Turn over and repeat.
  6. Open the sides and repeat the same moves from the previous step. There's no need to pre-crease for the sides.
  7. Turn the folded paper so that the little pointy flaps face you. Fold them to the center, then fold the corner back. (Do this on both sides.) Unfold both of those. Fold the top of it down so that it touches the little flaps. Crease it well.
  8. Unfold, then open up the top until it's stopped at that little crease you just made. Tuck the inside of the flaps up into the pocket until it makes a point at the top.
  9. Turn it over and repeat.
  10. Open the sides and repeat.
  11. The next set of folds is the last, but where they go is a little tricky. Look at the pieces with the little triangles on them, pointing up. Open the side and there won't be a triangle there. Fold the sides to the middle, and close it so you see the triangle again.
  12. Repeat this on all the sides that do not have the little triangles.
  13. When you finish, there will be four flaps at the top. The sides with the flaps folded to the middle should be on the outside.
  14. Using a pencil or your finger, curl these flaps down.
  15. The lily emerges!
  16. Finished.

Edit Tips

  • These make beautiful decorations, but many instructions fail to tell you how to make stems. To make stems:
    • Find three green twist ties and knot them together at the top.
    • Braid them until there is nothing left in the strand.
    • Then knot them at the bottom.
    • Push the braided twist ties from the top into the lily and down. Voila, stems!
  • Make a few of these lilies and arrange them in a flower pot for a pretty floral decoration.

Edit Things You'll Need
