How to Find out Someone's Birthday Feb 20th 2013, 04:00 Not sure when your best friend's birthday is? Forgotten your mom's birthday? If you feel too sheepish to ask for the date but want to find it out without being too obvious, here are some ways to find out. Stealth Methods - Use a social network like Facebook. See if the person has listed their birthday on Facebook. To find a birthday on Facebook, log in to your account. Type in the name of the person you're looking for. When you get to their timeline, click on the info box below their profile picture. Their birthday should be listed under "basic info." Note that you may have to add the person as a friend for this method to be effective.
- You might also like to look at other social networking sites or sites where they keep their information obvious, such as blogs or portfolio websites.
- Peek at their calendar. Keep an eye on their calendar for things like "Birthday" or "Birthday party!" While less reliable, this can be a stealthy method to use when you have to figure out the date by yourself. Be careful here though, as being too obsessive about this can end up seeming creepy and doing more harm than good.
- Use an online database. There are a number of databases out there that you can try for little to no fee. For these to work, you'll generally have to know the full name of the person you're searching and their approximate age.
- To begin, try Birthdatabase[1] or another free database. As long as you know the first and last name and the approximate age of the person, the site will usually be able to return a birthdate.
- Try a fee-based service. If you don't have all of the proper info or the previous does not work, try a fee-based service. This could be something like publicbackgroundchecks[2], where you pay a small sum for a little bit of information. Or, use something more comprehensive, such as Government-records.com[3], which sometimes directs you to sites requiring a month-long subscription.
Ask a Mutual Acquaintance - Ask a mutual friend or relative. If you and the person in question have any mutual friends, consider asking the friend to tell you the appropriate birthdate. If they don't know, ask the friend to find out for you.
- Ask a colleague or co-worker. If it's someone from work, there is usually someone who knows the birthdays of everyone in the office or workplace. Don't snoop though and don't even bother asking personnel for confidential records!
Ask the Person Directly - Ask the person. Okay, you knew this was coming, right? Put aside the pride and as a last resort, just ask the person. Weigh the unpleasant consequences of missing their birthday versus the reality of simply asking. If it's someone who expects you to know the date, apologize for the fact that you don't––tell them you're having a senior's moment, experiencing a headache that's disrupted your memory or that you're just plain forgetful (too much study/work/visiting relatives, whatever). Be sure to write the date down (and add it to your electronic calendar if possible), as soon as you learn it, so that you don't have to ask for it again.
- Keep an online diary. Note all birthdays and turn them into recurring reminder dates. You'll never forget their birthday again.
Edit Warnings - If you miss the birthday because you didn't find out, apologize with a gift and belated card and then write down the date for future reference. Don't be late the next year!
