Some people communicate with the dead because they just can’t move on, and need some closure with someone they have lost; others do it just for fun, as a kind of game. There are lots of methods for connecting with the spirit world – some more believable than others – but you can decide for yourself: here are the most widespread ways of communicating with the dead.

10
Meditation

Meditation-6
Meditation is widely used for body and mind relaxation; and since you are supposed to become one with your spirit, it should be easy to access the spirit world at the same time, right? As a result, if you’ve become bored with your usual meditation ritual, spice it up a bit and add a little prayer…maybe you’ll be visited by a well-intentioned spirit.

Flashlight

This one is apparently quite difficult. First off, you need a fully-charged flashlight. You should put the flashlight on a solid surface, such as a table, and fix it with something so it doesn’t roll off. You are now ready to begin: not forgetting to be polite, you can invite a spirit to come answer your questions.

Automatic Writing

You have to be in a state of deep meditation, such as lucid dreaming, to achieve this one. After contacting the spirit world, words will spontaneously enter your head like thoughts – all you then need to do is write them down. Remember to have a pen in your hand and lots of paper – you never know how long they’re going to keep talking.

7
Table tipping

This one is straight from the movies! Best used with a group of friends and a round, light-weight table. You and your friends are supposed to sit at the table holding hands, inviting good spirits to connect with you. If the meditation is strong enough, you should feel a hum of energy coming right from the table.

6
Tarot cards

Tarot cards have been around since the 15th century and were originally used as a game (French Tarot). Beginning with the 18th century, fans of the occult attributed magic values to these playing cards – using them not merely as a game, but as a way to see into the future and to contact the dead. They became very widespread, especially among aristocratic families.

Each card has a pictogram, accompanied by a title that represents a particular concept, such as: Death, the Fool or the Magician. These cards, chosen in a specific order, are said to reveal the future or whatever information one seeks from the dead.

5
EVP and Digital Recorder

EVP, which stands for electronic voice phenomena, sends out electronically-generated noises that resemble speech. These noises shouldn’t be the result of an intentional voice recording, but a sort of background noise or a static which can be interpreted. A digital recorder can be used to capture the ‘voices’; however, these may arise from the power of suggestion – random sounds might be interpreted as voices in your own language. To counterbalance this possibility, a group of people are supposed to witness the EVP, and share their insights afterwards.

4
Astral projection

Imgres-6-2
This practice is meant to involve an outer-body experience. It is a very popular concept in history -the Ancient Egyptians, especially, had strong beliefs in the ability of the soul to travel beyond the body it inhabits, into the ka (soul world). Astral projection is supposed to happen as a result of deep meditation; it can also be experienced spontaneously, as the result of sleep deprivation, surgical operations, or near death experiences.

3
Séance

Imgres-7-3
A séance – or sitting, as it is also called – is conducted by a spirit medium and a group of believers eager to talk to the dead. It is usually held at a round table: everybody holds hands while the medium attempts to contact the spirit world.
The popularity of séances grew dramatically in the 19th century, along with the foundation of the religion called Spiritualism. Perhaps the best-known séances conducted at that time were those of Mary Todd Lincoln who, grieving the loss of her son, organized Spiritualist séances in the White House. These séances were even attended by her husband, President Abraham Lincoln.

2
Scrying

Imgres-8-4
Scrying involves glimpsing things such as faces, people or even words on a certain surface; it is most commonly used for obtaining spiritual visions, or for fortune telling. The ‘seeing’ surface can be water, fire, smoke, a crystal globe, a black mirror or anything that screams magic. An example of a famous scryer is the one and only Nostradamus, who ‘saw’ the future in a bowl of water.

1
Ouija board

Imgres-9-3
This is probably the best known and the most widely used form of communicating with the dead. It dates back to 1871 and the concept is currently owned by game-maker Hasbro, which markets the Ouija as a part of its board-games.
The game (although most people probably don’t consider it a so) involves a wooden board with the alphabet, numbers 0 to 9, words Yes, No and Goodbye carved onto it. How to use it? First, you have to call some friends over! Then, place the board on a hard surface such as a table, and place both of your hands onto the planchette (a movable indicator that accompanies the board). Now you are ready to connect with the dead: do your usual incantations, summon the spirit, and ask away. If the spirits are in a talkative mood, you’ll notice the planchette moving along the board, indicating words or, if you’re lucky, a full sentence!
