How to Make Cookie Puppets
Sep 16th 2012, 00:00

Cookie puppets are a neat twist on the average finger puppet that lets kids play with their food before eating it! Easy to make, these cookie puppets are an ideal treat for kids' parties, a playdate or a rainy day stuck indoors.

Edit Ingredients

For the dough

  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) of salt
  • 2 cups (400g) of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons (10g) of baking soda
  • 3 sticks / 1 1/2 cups (360g) of butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 cups (600g) of flour

For the frosting

  • 1/2 cup (95g) of shortening
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) of vanilla extract
  • 4 cups (400gm) of confectioner's/powdered/icing sugar
  • 5 tablespoons (75ml) of milk

Edit Steps

Making the cookies

  1. Place the unwrapped butter in a large bowl. Let them sit at room temperature for about an hour to soften.
  2. Add the sugar to the bowl, and cream the butter and sugar together. You may use an electric mixer or mix by hand with a wooden spoon.
  3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract. Adding the eggs one at a time will keep your kitchen the cleanest and help prevent a mess. Make sure the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  4. Mix the flour, the salt, and the baking soda together. Adding dry ingredients part by part will make it easier to mix. Also, mixing on a low setting at first will help to keep flour from flying every where.
  5. Wrap the bowl with plastic wrap then put it in the fridge for at least an hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F/200ÂșC.
  7. Remove the dough from the fridge. Use your hands to form it into a big ball. You should also lay out a cookie sheet for your cookies. Read below on how to form the different types of cookie puppets.
  8. Make face cookie puppets:
    • Roll one big ball about two inches (5cm) in diameter. Flatten it and stick a craft stick inside of it.
    • Roll two smaller balls and flatten those on the sides to be ears.
  9. Make people cookie puppets:
    • Use a cookie cutter to shape your person, then stick it with a craft stick.
    • Alternatively, you could cut your own shapes with scissors.
  10. Put the cookies in the oven and set the timer for 6-12 minutes. You want them crisp, but not brown.
  11. Let the cookies cool for 15 minutes before decorating.

Making the frosting

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and shortening until smooth.
  2. Gradually mix in the milk and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth and stiff, about 5 minutes.
  3. Color with food coloring if desired.
  4. Spread the frosting on all the cookies. This will make sure that the decorations stick.

Decorating the Puppets

  1. Gather your decorations. Jimmies, cereal, colored sugar, dried fruit, nuts, edible food paint, edible pearls, and chocolate chips work great (just to name a few).
  2. Bring in the kids and let them make a masterpiece.

Edit Tips

  • If you don't want to wait for your butter to soften, put the bowl in the microwave for 10-20 seconds, but make sure it doesn't melt.
  • Both baking soda and baking powder work in this recipe.
  • Use a spatula the scrap down the sides of the bowl.
  • Make sure not to put your puppets too close to each other on the cookie sheet because they will spread. A lot.
  • To keep the kids busy, have them help you make the dough, shape, and decorate the cookies.

Edit Warnings

  • Never stick your hand in the bowl while using an electric mixer.
  • To make sure your house does not go up in flames, soak the craft sticks in cold water for 30 minutes before baking.
  • Although this is a kid-friendly recipe, it still requires adult supervision.
