How to Make Glow Jars
Nov 1st 2012, 00:00

Glow jars are ideal decorative items for creating atmosphere for parties, Halloween, dark rooms and anything else where you're keen to add a little glow. Containing basic items that you can easily source, glow jars won't take you long to create and put to good use. Here is what to do.

Edit Steps

Highlighter ink jar

  1. Cut open a highlighter with care. Remove the felt stick (ink cartridge) located inside the highlighter. It's recommended that you wear disposable gloves when handling everything, to avoid staining your skin. Also, place something over your work space to prevent staining (this tutorial shows a piece of unwanted carpet off-cut placed over the work surface.)
  2. Put the highlighter ink cartridge in the jar. You only need one cartridge per jar.
  3. Fill the jar with plain water.
  4. Mix the liquid around a bit. Then, let it sit for a day to achieve the best effects.
  5. The following day, take out the highlighter cartridge. You should find the result is one cool looking jar. To use, place under black light and you'll get a great glow for parties, trick and treating or stage props.

Poster paint jar

  1. Instead of highlighter fluid, you can also try a bit of poster paint in fluorescent colors. With most brands, this will turn out fabulously. Just add enough paint to color the water, and mix well.
  2. To make it glow, try using purpose-made poster paint. Glow-in-the-dark poster paint is readily available almost anywhere, and will make your jars glow in the dark for up to a quarter of an hour after turning out the lights.

Displaying the glow jars

  1. Once finished, place the glow jars somewhere that they'll glow to the best advantage--they look absolutely awesome under black lights, as if they're radioactive!

Edit Tips

  • Make jars in different colors for cooler effects.
  • Black light sources are usually specially designed lights, such as those made from fluorescent lamps, mercury vapor lamps, light-emitting diodes, or incandescent lamps.

Edit Warnings

  • Be careful of the highlighter fluid; do not drink the water! Wash your hands well after making the project.
  • Do not tip the highlighter fluid or paint down a sink or drain--pour it into a jar for garbage disposal or onto some ground in your garden that does not have any plants growing in it (for example, a pile of dirt). The fluid may harm water quality and aquatic life.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Highlighter cartridges or poster paint
  • Jars
  • Water
  • Black light (optional but recommended)
  • Knife (or scissors) to cut the highlighter open (a knife is easier to cut with)
