How to Make a Duct Tape Rose
Oct 2nd 2012, 14:00

Nothing sweeter than a rose, except when it's a rose made by hand! This duct tape rose is an entertaining craft project that will amuse the person you give it to. An ideal addition to a bouquet for someone you love, from your mother to your lover, it's also a great display idea for your home decor.

Edit Steps

Simple version

  1. Tear a 2 x 2 inch (5 x 5cm) square of duct tape. It doesn't have to be exact, just the general size indicated.
  2. Fold the right corner down, leaving some of the sticky side on the side and bottom showing.
  3. Fold the left corner down flush with the other corner.
  4. Take the straw/craft stick or other object, and wrap the petal around it. Try to put it on at a slight angle to create the appearance of an opening rose.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4, laying the petals over the last one in the same direction.
  6. After a little while, you should have formed a rose.
  7. For a stem, cover the rest of the straw/craft stick in duct tape.
  8. Finally, add a little duct tape under the rose to help support it.

Advanced version

  1. Cut around 20 skinny (1/10th inch/3mm) strips of duct tape. Stick them somewhere you can easily access and remove them from quickly. You'll need them later; it's just that it's best to prepare them now.
  2. Cut a 2 inch (5cm) square piece of duct tape. Place a penny (or similar small coin/round object) in the center of the tape (on the sticky side). Take another 2 inch (5cm) square piece of tape and scrunch it up. Put the ball of tape on top of the penny. Now fold up the corners of the tape. You should wind up with a triangular duct tape object (closely resembling a Hershey's Kiss chocolate). Make the tip of the triangle pointy, and make the object as rounded and symmetrical as possible.
  3. Take a 2 inch (5cm) strip of duct tape. Fold it in half (sticky side in). Try to make it as smooth as possible and relatively bubble-less.
  4. Using a marker, draw about five leaf shapes (you may decide you want more or less) on the duct tape. You may want to vary the size of the leaves. Then, cut them out. As you're cutting out the leaves, pinch the base of a leaf so that those two dots meet. With a small skinny strip of duct tape, tape the leaf so that those dots meet and the leaf curves.
  5. Draw five petals (you may want more) on the duct tape. You'll want the petals to be about 1/8th inch (3.1mm) longer than the height of the triangle (Hershey's Kiss shape) you made earlier. Subtly vary the top edge of the petals (make little imperfections or very slight curves) to mimic natural petals. Next, cut out the petals. When you have cut out the petals, join the little dots as you did with the leaves. This gives the petals a natural looking pocket and makes them easier to attach to the triangle shape (Kiss).
  6. Tape the base of one petal to the bottom of the triangle shape (Kiss) with a skinny strip of tape. Anchor both sides of the petal to the triangle shape loosely with skinny pieces of tape.
  7. Tape the base of another petal to the bottom of the triangle shape. You'll want one edge of this petal to slightly overlap the first petal. Anchor the overlapping side loosely and nearer to the base. Anchor the other edge a little more securely.
  8. Tape the base of a third petal to the bottom of the triangle shape (Kiss). Both sides of this petal should slightly overlap the other two petals. Anchor both sides of the petal loosely and nearer to the base.
  9. If your rose thus far is too loose and flimsy, you'll need to tape the petals down a little better. It should look like an opening rosebud.
  10. Tape the base of the fourth and fifth petals to the bottom of the triangle shape (Kiss). Place these petals on opposite sides. Their edges should almost touch. Join the edges with a skinny strip of tape at the very base of the petals.
  11. Attach the sepal. You'll need an approximately square piece of duct tape. Place a quarter in the center. Once you've cut the duct tape, start in one of the sections and fold the corners in. Do this with each section, but leave the quarter free. In the end, you should have something sort of resembling a star. Shape the points of your star so that they look like leaves. Take the quarter off, and in its place, put your rosebud.
  12. Attach the stem. Cut a long 1/2 inch (12.7mm) strip of duct tape. Wrap the tape around the wire stick. You can attach the stem to the rosebud by kind of scrunching up the base of the rosebud and simply taping the stem to the flower. Secure it well.
  13. Tape the leaves to the stem in whatever fashion you like. Use a lot or use a little. Just tape the leaves onto the wire with the skinny strips of tape you cut earlier. Wrap the base of the leaves to the stem.
  14. Finished.

Edit Tips

  • Using colored duct tape makes the flowers really pretty. Alternatively, you could spray paint the finished rose––do this somewhere well ventilated and prepare for mess!
  • Duct tape tends to get stuck to scissors; Exacto knives work a lot better.
  • Use a heavy piece of cardboard to cut the duct tape on.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • A 12 inch/30cm long wire stick (a wire hanger is a good source)
  • A penny or similar small coin or round object
  • A quarter or similar small coin or round object
  • You may need WD-40, goo removing solution or eucalyptus oil to get the sticky off your scissors
  • Duct tape
