How to Make Glazed Apples Oct 9th 2012, 00:00 Glazed apples are a delicious way to present apples for dessert or as a supper treat. You can either make them using a skillet or in the microwave, depending on your preference––this article offers both choices. Servings: Approximately 4 Edit Ingredients Skillet version: - 4 large apples (Granny Smiths are a good choice), cored and cut into thin rings
- 1/2 cup apple juice
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger, ground (if preferred, use thinly minced fresh ginger)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
- 1/4 cup butter or preferred fat
- 1/2 cup raw or brown sugar
- Whipped cream (optional)
Microwave version: - 4 green cooking apples
- 2 tablespoons sultanas
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 30g/1 oz butter, cut into four even pieces
- 1 tablespoon golden syrup (this syrup can be substituted with honey, corn syrup or similar syrup, or you can make your own sugar syrup)
- 2 tablespoons water
- Whipped cream (your choice)
Skillet version - In a small bowl, mix together the juice, ginger and cinnamon.
- Melt the butter in the skillet over medium heat.
- Add the apple rings, in batches. Cook until each side is browned and remove each browned batch and set aside.
- When all of the apple rings have been cooked, place all of them back in the skillet. Pour the juice mixture over the top, then sprinkle with sugar.
- Place a lid over the skillet. Cook for 5 minutes over medium heat or until the apples appear softened and glazed.
- Serve. These are perfect on their own but if you love ice cream or whipped cream, these make great additions.
Microwave version - Carefully cut the core from the apples. Leave the bases intact.
- Peel a thin strip of skin from around the center of the apple.
- Mix sultanas, brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.
- Press this mixture firmly into the center holes in the apples.
- Put a dab of butter on top of each apple.
- Put the apples in a microwave-safe baking dish. Add the golden syrup and water.
- Cook in the microwave on high for 5 minutes.
- Remove the apples from the microwave and pour the melted syrup over the apples. Do this carefully, as it will now be very hot.
- Return to the microwave. Cook on high for 5 minutes.
- Remove from the oven. Let cool for 3 minutes before serving. Serve cream or ice cream with it––these toppings enhance the taste.
- Add raisins or other toppings if you like.
