Ward off vampires with garlic vodka

When Halloween approaches, the vampires get restless. And as the partying goes into full swing, the vampires just wanna join in... Scare them away with your own version of garlic vodka––tasty, garlicky and quite a treat.

Edit Ingredients

  • 750ml - 1 liter vodka
  • 6-8 garlic cloves, medium garlic bulb

Edit Steps

  1. Peel the garlic cloves.
  2. Place the peeled cloves into the mason jar.
  3. Fill the mason jar with vodka.
  4. Screw on the lid. Shake vigorously for a bit.
  5. Place the jar in a cool, dark place to infuse. Garlic is a strong flavor, hence only a few days will be sufficient (3-4 days).
  6. Strain the vodka through a strainer, coffee filter or muslin cloth. Discard the cloves. Return the infused vodka to a suitable serving bottle.
  7. Serve. This is an unusual flavor but luckily for the ghouls and ghostettes at Halloween time, it goes superbly well with tomato juice for a garlicky Bloody Mary (known by some as a "Bloody Maria"). Just ideal for the Halloween season!

Edit Tips

  • Garlic vodka is an acquired taste. Either you love garlic, or you don't!
  • Some variations on this infusion include other herbs and spices, such as a spicy jalapeƱo pepper or a sprig of basil or mint. These can balance the garlicky flavor to make it taste even more interesting. You might find it a good idea to experiment by dividing the infusing vodka into two jars and testing one flavored with just garlic cloves and one flavored with garlic cloves and a fresh herb or spice.
  • Daily tasting can help you to work out at what point the infusion is adequate for your liking.
  • Some say garlic vodka has healing properties, such as chasing away acne or bacteria, as well as those vampires. Try not to place too much stock on these theories though––this is alcohol after all and not a medicine.

Edit Warnings

  • The longer the garlic is allowed to infuse, the stronger the flavor.
  • Do not use any garlic showing signs of rot, molding or discoloration; this could endanger your health.

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Mason jar with lid (or similar container)
  • Strainer, coffee filter or muslin for straining
  • Suitable serving/storage bottle for the vodka
