| How to Create a Candy Bar Wrapper Purse Nov 7th 2012, 20:00 Turn your favorite candy bar wrappers into a long-term work of art by transforming them into a bag you can tote everywhere. It's a fun way to recycle wrappers and to show off your unique fashion style. - Find a purse or small bag. It can be new or used, just as long as you're happy to create with it. Make sure the shape and the fit of the purse or bag is one you're happy to carry around.
- Collect all the wrappers needed. You'll need enough wrappers to cover the purse. And pick up Mod Podge™ from your local craft store. This is a glue-like substance that will work better than glue with this project. If you can't find Mod Podge, you can still use craft glue but it might not be as neat.
- Cover the backs of the wrappers with the Mod Podge (or glue mixture). Next, layer the wrappers onto the purse in as even an order as you can manage. Once you're happy with the placement, give them another coat, so that they hold together neatly when dry.
- Layer the wrappers with care to give the design a more impressive look. You might want to match images or words, overlap them or make unusual connections. Whatever way you choose, be sure to keep it consistent:
- Make the purse strap. Apply the Mod Podge solution to the wrapper, then wrap the candy bar wrappers individually around the strap. Keep doing this until all of the strap has been evenly covered with the wrappers. Allow to dry.
- Avoid gluing wrappers over the zipper area (if there is one). Stick the wrappers around any zipper, while leaving a flap of the wrappers sticking up. These flaps can be trimmed off later, using a pair of scissors, so that the design finishes off neatly.
- Once the Mod Podge has dried, apply a few coats of protective varnish or acrylic sealer, so that the purse will hold up for years to come. This protective layer should take care of any wayward pieces of wrapper sticking up (smooth them down as you paint) and will leave the purse able to cope with the usual wear and tear of bag usage.
- Let your purse completely dry before using it. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions for drying time.
- Try making a matching wallet, checkbook cover, or belt, using the same tips as above.
- Read the instructions on the Mod Podge container for the application process.
- Protective varnish or acrylic sealer comes in spray cans, and in paint bottles. They both work well, but the spray is easier and faster to apply.
- Try this method with food can labels, CD booklets of your favorite singers or bands, or jar labels.
- Remember, this is not a rainy-day kind of event. You have to prepare for the project by eating a lot of candy! Depending on the size of the purse, you may want to ask family, friends, and co-workers to give you candy wrappers.
Edit Warnings - Read the Mod Podge container for warnings on the product use.
Edit Things You'll Need - Purse or small bag as base model
- Candy wrappers, enough to cover the purse or bag chosen
- Mod Podge – to save money, white Elmers glue mixed with water will also work, but not as well as Mod Podge
