How to Make a Bloo Doll
Nov 3rd 2012, 12:00

Bloo is a character from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Even if you're not familiar with Bloo, this is a cute design for sewing and makes a great toy or decorative item. It's a budget-friendly and beginner sewing-friendly project too!

Edit Steps

  1. Find a plain colored beanie. If you're making Bloo, it'll need to be in a blue shade but you can use any color you want if it's not a true reflection of Bloo. Going by how large the beanie is, eyeball a good amount of unused/unwanted but clean socks (or white fabric scraps) that could fit inside of this figure.
  2. Leave out two socks, or a part of the white fabric. Take an item that has a medium sized circle on the bottom and trace and cut out 2 circles on the cloth or socks. The ideal circle size would be something like the lid of an air freshener can or something close to that size.
    Cut out the eyes.

  3. Using your own estimate of the center of the circles, mark a middle point. Sew on a black button for each eye pupil. If you want to make the eyes crazy, place them at different angles.
Place eyes and sew on buttons.

  4. Decide where you'll place the eyes. Naturally they go on the upper portion of the beanie but the actual placement depends on the image you want Bloo to reflect. The eyes could be simple and straight or, if you want them slanted or far apart, this can add a kooky but fun element to the finished look. Sew the eyes on with a white thread so it doesn't look like he has a black eye, unless that's the look you're going for.
  5. Take a marker and draw out a mouth. The one shown here has been drawn closed so there isn't much work to do. Then sew the marked area.
  6. Stuff the rest of the cloth or socks inside the beanie and close it up with a matching color thread. You're done!

Edit Tips

  • This would be a great gift for a Foster's fan.
  • You don't have to sew by hand if you'd rather use a sewing machine.
  • Instead of stuffing with cloth or socks, you can also use beans for a beanie-bag type stuffed Bloo.
  • With a little bit of imagination and a yellow beanie, this could be a Pacman character!

Edit Things You'll Need

  • Plain beanie
  • Needle and matching color thread
  • Pile of old, but clean socks (or white scrap fabric)
  • 2 black buttons
  • A circular item
